Blepharoplasty/ Eyelid Surgery

Surgery to remove excess skin and resuspend, reposition, or remove fatty tissue from both upper and lower eyelids

Our eyes convey emotions to those around us and can express a refreshed vigor and youthfulness. Unfortunately, be it genetics or the natural process of aging, skin laxity, puffiness, and bags around the eyes can also give a tired and heavy appearance.

It's because of this that blepharoplasty surgery of the upper and lower eyelids are such powerful procedures to rejuvenate and refresh the face.

With blepharoplasty surgery, we can tighten skin laxity, as well as smoothen shadows and transitions along the eyelids and cheeks. At the same time, we can resuspend, or in some cases remove fat pads that cause puffiness along the eyes.

Not all patients may need a surgical procedure to reach their goals. Our surgeons may consider and recommended non-surgical treatments such as lower eyelid (tear trough) fillers, chemical peels, or lasers to help tighten and smoothen minor problems.

Sometimes less is more, but other times a little more can go a long way. Your surgeon should be able to guide in making the right decision.

Types of Blepharoplasty

No two surgeries are alike

Upper Lid Blepharoplasty

Done through an upper eyelid incision (along a natural crease), excess skin is removed. If any fat pads of the eyelid are excessive or herniating, they can be repositioned. Brow fat and lacrimal gland droop (ptosis) can also be resuspended during this procedure.

Lower Lid Blepharoplasty +/- Mid-facelift

This surgery is performed via an eyelash incision (transcutaneous) or an invisible incision inside the eyelid (transconjunctival) incision. This decision will be based on several anatomical considerations and surgical goals. During surgery, fat pads can be resuspended and reduced, while any laxity of the skin and musculature around the eyelid can adjusted if necessary. While many variations of this procedure exist, it is important that your surgeon understands the indications, limitations, and safety of each technique. In some instances a "mid-face lift" may also be achieved through this incision to help bring the cheek fat pats to a more harmonious position.

Asian Blepharoplasty - Double Eyelid Surgery

This procedure is used to create an upper eyelid crease in individuals born without one. This variant eyelid without a crease is a result from an anatomical difference in the way that the upper eyelid muscle inserts on the edges of the upper eyelid. This procedure, also known as a "double eyelid surgery", is done through the same upper eyelid incision as an upper lid blepharoplasty.

Who is a candidate for blepharoplasty?

Men and women with excessive upper eyelid skin, puffiness from fat pad herniation, or drooping eyebrows are candidates for upper eyelid blepharoplasty with or without a brow lift.

Those with hollowing, dark circles, puffiness, or folds of excess skin on the lower eyelids are candidates for lower eyelid surgery.

Individuals of Asian descent who do not have an eyelid crease and are seeking double eyelid surgery are also candidates.

In some cases, your surgeon may recommend non-surgical treatments such as volume replacement with fillers or skin tightening via chemical peels or lasers in order to avoid eyelid deformities and chronic dry eye complications.
